It solution: EMERALD (anagram of 'lame red').

When can red appear green? There is an interesting story about a person driving a car who sped ignoring red. When questioned his defence was that the red light looked like green due to Doppler effect. Read Yakov Perelman's Physics for Entertainment (final 13th edition published in 1936) calculating the possibilities for the validity of the driver's claim.
